Types of Qualifications:
Which One Is Right for You?

Every GMIoT course sits on the same ladder, from Level 3 to Level 6, but the qualification names change depending on your subject and provider. Here's what you'll actually see on a course page. To see how they fit together level by level, explore the qualification pathways.

Types of Qualifications at GMIoT

HNC: Higher National CertificateLevel 4 · Typically 1 Year Full-Time

A focused, career-ready qualification usually studied full-time over one year. It's a common starting point for engineering, construction, computing and health & social care routes, and the most widely offered qualification across GMIoT's partner colleges.

HND: Higher National DiplomaLevel 5 · Typically 2 Years Full-Time

A two-year qualification, often an HNC plus a second year, that goes deeper into your subject and carries more UCAS-recognised weight. Many GMIoT students use an HND as the springboard into a final "top-up" year for a full degree.

HTQ: Higher Technical QualificationNot a Level on Its Own · A Government-Approved Standard

HTQ isn't a separate qualification type. It's a quality mark that sits alongside an HNC or HND once that course has been approved against employer-set occupational standards. You'll see it written as "HNC/HTQ" on course pages: it means employers have directly shaped what you'll be taught.

Common Questions About Qualification Types

What Is the Difference Between an HNC and an HND?
An HNC is a one-year Level 4 qualification, equivalent to the first year of a degree. An HND is a two-year Level 5 qualification, equivalent to the second year. Many students take an HNC first and carry on to an HND.
Which Qualification Levels Does GMIoT Cover?
The GMIoT study ladder runs from Level 3 to Level 6. Most courses sit at Level 4 (HNC, CertHE) and Level 5 (HND, DipHE, foundation degree), with routes on to Level 6 through top-up degrees and degree apprenticeships.
Can I Study Without A Levels?
Often, yes. Entry requirements vary by course, but other Level 3 qualifications, relevant work experience or an Access to HE Diploma can open the door to Level 4 study. Speak to the course team about your options.
What Does the HTQ Mark Mean?
HTQ stands for Higher Technical Qualification. It's a quality mark on approved HNCs and HNDs showing that employers helped shape the content. It isn't a separate type of qualification.
