What Is an HNC? Higher National Certificate | GMIoT

HNC: Higher National Certificate

A one-year, career-focused qualification at Level 4. It's the most common starting point across the Greater Manchester Institute of Technology's engineering, construction, computing and health & social care courses, and a direct route onto an HND or degree if you want to carry on.

What Is an HNC?

An HNC (Higher National Certificate) is a Level 4 qualification, one step above A Levels and BTEC Level 3, typically studied full-time over one academic year at a GMIoT partner college. It's a recognised UK higher education qualification, accepted by employers and universities alike.

Unlike a full degree, an HNC is tightly focused on one subject area and built around practical, work-relevant skills. Many GMIoT HNCs also carry the HTQ (Higher Technical Qualification) quality mark, meaning employers helped shape what's taught.

HNC vs HND: What's the Difference?

They sit on the same ladder, one year apart. Here's how they compare side by side, or read the full HND guide.

What You'll Study on an HNC

Content varies by subject. As an example, GMIoT's Automation and Control Engineering HNC covers:

  • Engineering Maths & Engineering Science
  • Engineering Mechanics and Materials
  • Analogue and Digital Electronics
  • Automation, Robotics and PLCs
  • Professional Engineering Practice

Is an HNC Right for You?

Good Fit If You…

  • Want a hands-on, career-focused route rather than a traditional 3-year degree
  • Have around 96 UCAS points (e.g. CCC at A Level, or an equivalent BTEC)
  • Already know roughly which industry you want to work in
  • Might want to progress to an HND or degree top-up later

Worth Knowing

  • You'll usually need GCSE Maths at grade 4/C or above
  • It's narrower in scope than a full degree: one subject, in depth
  • Not every HNC carries the HTQ mark, so check the individual course page

Common Questions About HNCs

Can I Go to University After an HNC?
Yes. Most students progress to an HND (adding a second year), or straight into the second year of a related degree, depending on the university's own entry policy.
What If I Don't Meet the Entry Requirements?
Speak to the course team. Relevant work experience and other qualifications can sometimes be taken into account (APL), and an Access to HE Diploma is a common alternative starting point for adult learners.
Is an HNC the Same as an HTQ?
Not quite. HTQ is a quality mark, not a qualification type on its own. An HNC can carry the HTQ mark once it's been approved against employer-set standards, so check the individual course page to see if it does.
How Much Does an HNC Cost?
Costs vary by course and college, and many students are eligible for the same student finance available for degree-level study. Check the specific course page for current fees and funding options.
