What Each Qualification Level Means

The levels are the same ones used for every qualification in England, so you can compare an apprenticeship with a year of a degree like-for-like. Most GMIoT courses sit at Levels 4 and 5: find out more about higher level qualifications, or read our guide to the types of qualifications.

FAQs

Common Questions About Qualification Levels

Do I Have to Start at Level 3?
No. Where you start depends on what you already have. With A Levels, a BTEC National or a T Level you'd usually start at Level 4. Without them, college or an Access to HE Diploma is the usual way in. Entry requirements vary by course, so explore courses to check each one.
Can I Switch Routes Part-Way?
Often, yes. For example, an HND, DipHE or Foundation Degree can all lead on to a top-up degree. Each provider sets its own entry rules, so speak to the course team before you plan a switch.
What's the Difference Between a Top-Up and a Full Degree?
Both finish at Level 6 with an honours degree. A full degree covers all three levels in one three-year course. A top-up is the final year only, taken after you've finished a Level 5 qualification such as an HND.
How Do Apprenticeships Work?
You're employed and paid, and split your time between work and study. In England, apprentices don't pay tuition fees: training costs are covered by the employer and government.
