What Is an HND? Higher National Diploma | GMIoT

HND: Higher National Diploma

A two-year, career-focused qualification at Level 5, equivalent to the second year of a degree. It goes deeper than an HNC, and a one-year top-up can turn it into a full honours degree at the Greater Manchester Institute of Technology's university partners.

What Is an HND?

An HND (Higher National Diploma) is a Level 5 qualification, typically studied full-time over two years at a GMIoT partner college. It's equivalent to the second year of a bachelor's degree, and it's recognised by employers and universities across the UK.

In many subjects the first year of an HND is the same as an HNC, so you can collect an HNC along the way and carry on. Many GMIoT HNDs also carry the HTQ (Higher Technical Qualification) quality mark, meaning employers helped shape what's taught.

HND vs a Bachelor's Degree: What's the Difference?

Both can lead to the same honours degree. Here's how the two routes compare.

What to Expect From an HND

Content varies by subject, but most HNDs are built from the same ingredients:

  • Core units that build the fundamentals of your subject
  • Specialist units in the area you want to work in
  • Practical projects and assignments based on real workplace tasks
  • A larger independent or work-related project towards the end
  • Assessment mostly through coursework, projects and presentations

Is an HND Right for You?

Good Fit If You…

  • Want to study at degree level without committing to three years up front
  • Have an HNC, or Level 3 qualifications such as A Levels, a BTEC National or a T Level
  • Want a clear option to top up to a full honours degree later
  • Want practical skills that employers in your sector recognise

Worth Knowing

  • It takes two years full-time, so plan for the longer commitment
  • Entry requirements vary by course, so check the individual course page
  • Top-up places and entry rules are set by each university
  • Not every HND carries the HTQ mark

Common Questions About HNDs

Can I Go to University After an HND?
Yes. Most students progress to a one-year top-up at Level 6 to complete an honours degree. Some universities also accept HND students into the second or third year of a related degree, depending on their own entry policy.
Is an HND Better Than an HNC?
Neither is better, they're different stages. An HNC is the first year at Level 4, while an HND takes you to Level 5 with more depth. Choose an HNC for a shorter start, or an HND if you want to go further.
Do I Need an HNC Before an HND?
Not always. Many HND courses start at Level 4 and cover the HNC content in the first year, so you apply for the HND directly. Check the individual course page to see how it's structured.
How Much Does an HND Cost?
Costs vary by course and college, and many students are eligible for student finance. Check the specific course page for current fees and funding options.
