Types of Qualifications:
Which One Is Right for You?
Every GMIoT course sits on the same ladder, from Level 3 to Level 6, but the qualification names change depending on your subject and provider. Here's what you'll actually see on a course page. To see how they fit together level by level, explore the qualification pathways.
Types of Qualifications at GMIoT
HNC: Higher National Certificate
A focused, career-ready qualification usually studied full-time over one year. It's a common starting point for engineering, construction, computing and health & social care routes, and the most widely offered qualification across GMIoT's partner colleges.
Learn More About HNCs →HND: Higher National Diploma
A two-year qualification, often an HNC plus a second year, that goes deeper into your subject and carries more UCAS-recognised weight. Many GMIoT students use an HND as the springboard into a final "top-up" year for a full degree.
Learn More About HNDs →HTQ: Higher Technical Qualification
HTQ isn't a separate qualification type. It's a quality mark that sits alongside an HNC or HND once that course has been approved against employer-set occupational standards. You'll see it written as "HNC/HTQ" on course pages: it means employers have directly shaped what you'll be taught.
Learn More About HTQs →Access to HE Diploma
Built for adults without traditional GCSEs or A Levels, this one-year diploma is a direct, recognised route into Level 4 study. If your last exam was a while ago, this is usually where to start.

University-badged equivalents to the HNC and HND, used on GMIoT's University of Salford courses. A CertHE (one year) and DipHE (two years) follow the same academic framework as a full degree, just stopping a year or two short of it.
Learn More About CertHEs → Learn More About DipHEs →FdSc & FdA: Foundation Degrees
A two-year, work-focused degree-level qualification: FdSc for science and health subjects (e.g. Health & Social Care), FdA for creative and arts subjects. Both are designed to top up into a full bachelor's degree in one further year.
Learn More About Foundation Degrees →Degree Top-Up (BSc / BEng Hons)
Already got an HND or foundation degree? A top-up year converts it into a full honours bachelor's degree, without starting a degree from scratch elsewhere.
Learn More About Top-Up Degrees →Higher Apprenticeships
A job with training. You're employed and paid, and split your time between work and study towards a Level 4 or Level 5 qualification. In England, apprentices don't pay tuition fees.
Learn More About Higher Apprenticeships →Degree Apprenticeships
Earn a full bachelor's degree while you work. You're employed and paid throughout, study with a university or college, and graduate without paying tuition fees.
Learn More About Degree Apprenticeships →BA, BEng and BSc (Hons)
A full honours degree that covers all three levels in one course. BA is Bachelor of Arts, BEng is Bachelor of Engineering and BSc is Bachelor of Science.
