Degree Apprenticeships: Earn a Full Degree While You Work
A Level 6 apprenticeship that combines a full bachelor's degree with a paid job. You work for an employer, study with a university or college, and graduate without paying tuition fees.
What Is a Degree Apprenticeship?
A degree apprenticeship is a job where you earn a bachelor's degree as part of your training. You're employed and paid throughout, studying part of your time with a university or college and working the rest. It runs at Level 6, the same level as an honours degree.
In England, apprentices don't pay tuition fees: training costs are covered by the employer and government. Degree apprenticeships typically take between three and six years depending on your starting point and the occupation.
Degree Apprenticeship vs Full-Time Degree: What's the Difference?
Both finish at Level 6. Here's how the two routes compare.
| Degree Apprenticeship | Full-Time Degree | |
|---|---|---|
| Level | Level 6 | Levels 4 to 6 |
| Typical Length | 3 to 6 years | 3 years full-time |
| Employment | Employed and paid throughout | Studying, usually with a part-time job at most |
| Tuition Fees | None for the apprentice | Usually paid with student finance |
How a Degree Apprenticeship Works
Every degree apprenticeship is different, but most follow the same pattern:
- You apply for a vacancy with an employer, usually through the employer's own recruitment
- You study for a degree with a university or college, often on day release or in blocks
- You spend the rest of your time working and building experience in the role
- Training is tied to an occupational standard, so what you learn matches the job
- You finish with an end-point assessment alongside your degree
