Overview
Set out on a dynamic journey into the world of Mechanical Engineering with this HNC course, which is designed to give you the essential knowledge and practical skills needed for a successful career in this field.
Our dedicated faculty, made up of experienced professionals, will guide you through the latest industry trends, technological advancements and sustainable practices.
You will also build essential skills in problem solving, project management and teamwork, all of which employers in the field value highly.
This Higher National Qualification is delivered as part of the Greater Manchester Institute of Technology (GMIoT), a regional partnership of leading colleges, universities and employers. As a GMIoT student, you will join an industry focused learning community and may benefit from a range of industry led learning opportunities.
These opportunities can include access to innovative facilities, industry inspired projects, workplace visits, guest speakers, mentoring, competitions and other activities that help you develop the specialist, in demand skills your chosen sector requires.
The additional opportunities offered through the GMIoT vary based on employer availability and project activity, but membership ensures that you are part of a network committed to preparing the region’s future technical workforce.
What You’ll Learn
You will explore the core principles of engineering in depth, including specialisms such as thermodynamics, mechanical principles and PLCs.
Mechanical Principles covers the study of fundamental laws and applications of the physical sciences within engineering, including static and dynamic forces, fluid mechanics and thermodynamics. This knowledge is supplemented by developing an understanding of how mechanical engineering, electronics, computer control and information technology are integrated.
You will be involved in hands on laboratory sessions, workshops and industry relevant projects, which will enhance your practical expertise and allow you to apply theoretical concepts to real world scenarios.
Successful completion of the course will enable you to carry out key mechanical engineering tasks in the sector, understand processes and operations, and work effectively in the industry.
Assessment
Coursework and assignments are widely used to assess you. You are given specific projects or tasks linked to your coursework, and you are evaluated on how well you apply theoretical knowledge to practical problems.
Practical laboratory sessions are a crucial part of an electrical engineering programme, and you may be assessed on your ability to carry out experiments, analyse data and draw conclusions from your findings.
You may be required to write technical reports based on your laboratory work or projects, and these reports assess how effectively you communicate technical information.
You may be asked to give presentations on engineering topics, projects or case studies, which assess your communication and presentation skills, along with your understanding of the subject matter.
Progression
Upon successful completion of the HNC programme, you will have the option to progress to an HND, or to enter the workforce with the confidence and competence to contribute effectively to the engineering industry.
On successful completion, you may progress to an HND at Level 5 and then to a top up Level 6 on a related undergraduate programme. Some of the degrees you could pursue are:
