Overview
Do robotics, automated systems and the technology that keeps modern industry moving fascinate you? Whether you are hoping to launch your engineering career or sharpen the skills you already have, this course will give you the knowledge and practical experience employers are looking for.
The HNC in Automation and Control Engineering has been developed with industry to meet the growing demand for engineers who can work with automation, robotics and control systems. You will study how modern engineering systems are designed, programmed, maintained and improved, building skills that are highly valued across manufacturing, engineering and technology sectors.
Your tutors have industry experience, understand what employers are looking for and will help you develop both your technical knowledge and your professional skills.
What You’ll Learn
The qualification consists of mandatory core units that are designed to build the knowledge, skills and behaviours required within automation and control engineering.
You will gain a strong understanding of engineering principles, and you will apply your learning to real world industry scenarios along the way.
Across the course, you will develop skills in problem solving, system analysis, programming, project management and professional engineering practice.
Assessment
Applying knowledge in practical and professional contexts is our focus, rather than relying solely on examinations.
The assessment methods include written assignments, practical engineering activities, technical reports, presentations, project work, case studies and professional discussions.
These assessments are designed to mirror the kinds of tasks you may meet in industry, and they help you build the confidence and competence that employers expect.
Progression
A range of exciting opportunities can follow from this qualification. The first is employment, where you can progress into technician level roles within automation, manufacturing, process control, robotics, maintenance engineering and industrial systems.
The second is the HND, where you continue your studies to complete a Higher National Diploma in a related engineering discipline.
The third is Higher or Degree Apprenticeships, where your qualification serves as a platform for further workplace based training and professional development. The course can also be delivered as part of a Higher or Degree Apprenticeship.
The fourth is a top up degree. Once your HND is complete, you can progress onto the BEng (Hons) Electrical & Electronic Engineering, awarded by the University of Central Lancashire and delivered right here at the University Centre Wigan & Leigh College.
As a Higher Technical Qualification (HTQ), the course has been approved against employer developed occupational standards, which gives employers confidence that you have developed the skills required within the industry.
The BEng (Hons) Electrical & Electronic Engineering carries accreditation from the Institution of Engineering and Technology (IET), on behalf of the Engineering Council. Graduates can apply for professional registration as a Chartered Engineer (CEng), which brings enhanced professional recognition and career opportunities within the engineering sector.
