Overview
Have you finished your HNC and feel ready to take your engineering education up a level?
The HND in Electronic and Electrical Systems Engineering (HTQ) is the ideal next move if you want to build advanced skills in power systems, automation and digital technologies. Whether you are heading towards senior technician roles or want a solid foundation before topping up to a full honours degree, the course gives you the higher level engineering knowledge that employers demand.
You will look at how electrical systems are evolving to meet the needs of smart technologies, sustainable infrastructure and emerging industry standards. Tutors with extensive industry backgrounds teach the course, using a practical, problem solving approach that is focused on real world projects.
The HND has been designed in line with employer needs and mapped to key occupational standards, and it is an exciting pathway into high level roles or further academic qualifications, right here at University Centre Wigan & Leigh College.
What You’ll Learn
The qualification builds on the core knowledge that you gained during your HNC, and it is structured to deepen your understanding of electrical and electronic engineering.
You will cover a range of specialist and core units, such as further engineering maths, embedded systems, analogue electronic systems, an engineering project, signals and systems, digital electronic systems, electrical engineering and sustainability, and analogue and digital communications.
Assessment
You will complete a wide range of assessments, including project work, practical assignments, written reports, presentations and reflective portfolios.
They are designed to build your confidence and to let you apply your learning directly to the kind of work you will meet in industry.
Progression
This course leads on to several next steps. One is employment, where you can step into roles such as electrical design engineer, control systems engineer or automation specialist.
Another is Higher or Degree Apprenticeships, where you can use this qualification as a launchpad into advanced structured training while you work.
A third is a top up degree. After completing your HND, you can progress onto the BEng (Hons) Electrical & Electronic Engineering, awarded by UCLan and delivered right here at the University Centre Wigan & Leigh College.
The IET, on behalf of the Engineering Council, accredits the BEng. Graduates can apply for professional registration as a Chartered Engineer, which gives you greater recognition, credibility and career potential across the industry.
