Overview
This course aims to give you a wider knowledge of engineering principles and methodology, along with the development of research and analytical skills, so that you are prepared for employment opportunities in the Electrical and Electronic Engineering field.
Reflection, critical thinking, environmental impact, analysis and personal development will all be a focus.
You will be guided through the latest industry trends, technological advancements and sustainable practices by a dedicated faculty made up of experienced professionals. You will also develop essential skills in problem solving, project management and teamwork, all of which employers in the field value highly.
This Higher National Qualification is delivered through the Greater Manchester Institute of Technology (GMIoT), which is a regional partnership of leading colleges, universities and employers. As a GMIoT student, you will become part of an industry focused learning community, and you may benefit from a range of industry led learning opportunities.
These opportunities can include access to innovative facilities, industry inspired projects, workplace visits, guest speakers, mentoring, competitions and other activities that help you build the specialist, in demand skills your chosen sector requires.
The additional opportunities the GMIoT offers vary according to employer availability and project activity, but membership ensures that you are part of a network committed to preparing the region’s future technical workforce.
What You’ll Learn
The units lay the foundation of learning by giving you a broad introduction to the engineering sector, together with a focused introduction to electrical and electronic engineering. This strengthens and builds core skills while preparing you for more specialist subjects at Level 5, or to enter employment with the necessary skills for jobs that involve some personal responsibility.
You will gain a broader range of engineering and scientific knowledge, linked to practical skills that you develop through research, directed study, independent study and workplace scenarios.
You will be involved in vocational activities that help you to develop behaviours and transferable skills, including communication, research, teamwork and analysis, all of which are highly regarded in higher education and in the workplace.
By the end of Level 4 study, you will have sound knowledge of the basic concepts of electrical and electronic engineering. You will also feel confident in a range of subject specific skills, as well as in general skills and qualities that are central to these important areas of engineering.
Assessment
Coursework and assignments are commonly used to assess you. You are given specific projects or tasks linked to your coursework, and you are evaluated on how well you apply theoretical knowledge to practical problems.
Practical laboratory sessions are a crucial part of an electrical engineering programme, and you may be assessed on your ability to carry out experiments, analyse data and draw conclusions from your findings.
You may be required to write technical reports based on your laboratory work or projects, and these reports assess how effectively you communicate technical information.
You may be asked to give presentations on engineering topics, projects or case studies, which assess your communication and presentation skills, along with your understanding of the subject matter.
Computer modelling and simulation techniques are used extensively, and there is an emphasis on practical applications throughout.
Progression
Once you have successfully completed the HNC programme, you will have the option to progress to an HND, or to enter the workforce with the confidence and competence to contribute effectively to the electrical and electronic engineering industry.
On successful completion, you may progress to an HND at Level 5 and then to a top up Level 6 on a related undergraduate programme. Some of the degrees you could pursue are:
