Overview
You can follow this programme over one year full time or two years part time, and a Higher National Certificate (HTQ) in Electrical and Electronic Engineering is completed through it. This qualification will suit you if you wish to apply for higher technical level employment with a view to moving into engineering management posts.
The HNC/HND in engineering course is designed to enable you, as someone who may have come through a vocational route, to progress into higher education, building on the knowledge gained at Level 3. The BTEC Level 3 Engineering full time course offered at Tameside College for 16 to 23 year olds can lead directly to this qualification, and so can the BTEC Level 3 Engineering part time course offered at Tameside College for 24+ year olds.
At levels 4 and 5, Higher Technical Qualifications (HTQ) offer an alternative to apprenticeships or degrees. If you want a more practical, employer led study programme, approved by the Institute for Apprenticeships and Technical Education, they may suit you. Employers have helped to develop these technical qualifications so that you can get the right training and skills you need to succeed at work.
All lecturers teaching this course hold a PGCE or equivalent qualification in education, and they also have their Level 6 qualification in Electrical Engineering. The lecturers in the engineering department at Tameside College hold at least 5 years of relevant industrial experience.
What You’ll Learn
For you, with a career in electrical engineering as your chosen route and a wish to follow this pathway, this Level 4 course offers both the higher level knowledge, theoretical aspects of mechanical science and design and also the understanding of how this is applied in industry. Alongside the academic content of a standard HNC or HND programme, the HTQ will also focus on the application of the working knowledge and skills required by industry.
Progression
On completion of this accredited course, you will receive a Level 4 Higher National Certificate in Electrical Engineering, awarded by Pearson. On successful completion of the HNC (HTQ) course, you will be eligible to enrol on the Level 5 HND (HTQ) and may continue to it. Once you have achieved the HND, you will be able to apply to study for a further year to obtain a full degree at university. This qualification is well regarded throughout the industry and the academic world. Career opportunities include managerial and technical positions in mechanical or electrical engineering.
