What Is an HTQ? Higher Technical Qualification | GMIoT

HTQ: Higher Technical Qualification

A government-approved quality mark on selected HNCs and HNDs. It tells you that employers helped shape what's taught, so the skills you gain match what the job needs.

What Is an HTQ?

HTQ stands for Higher Technical Qualification. It isn't a level of its own and it isn't a separate qualification type. It's a quality mark that sits on certain Level 4 and Level 5 qualifications, such as an HNC or an HND, once the course has been approved against employer-set occupational standards.

You'll see it written as "HNC/HTQ" or "HTQ/HNC" on course pages. HTQs are available in subjects such as engineering, construction, digital and health, across GMIoT's sectors.

HTQ vs a Standard HNC or HND: What's the Difference?

The qualification itself is the same type. The difference is the approval behind it.

Why the HTQ Mark Matters

The HTQ mark gives you a few useful signals:

  • Employers have helped shape what you'll be taught
  • The course has been checked against a national occupational standard
  • The skills you build line up with real job roles in your sector
  • It sits on a recognised HNC or HND, so progression routes stay the same

Is an HTQ Right for You?

Good Fit If You…

  • Want a qualification that employers have helped design
  • Plan to work in engineering, construction, digital or health
  • Want an HNC or HND with a clear link to job roles
  • Might want to progress to a higher level later

Worth Knowing

  • Not every HNC or HND carries the HTQ mark
  • Check the individual course page to see whether a course is approved
  • HTQ is a quality mark, so you still study for an HNC or HND

Common Questions About HTQs

Is an HTQ a Qualification?
Not on its own. HTQ is a quality mark, not a qualification type. It sits on an HNC or HND that has been approved against employer-set standards.
Is an HTQ Better Than an HNC?
They aren't alternatives. An HTQ-marked course is still an HNC or HND, with the extra assurance that employers have shaped the content.
Which GMIoT Courses Carry the HTQ Mark?
Look for HTQ in the course title, such as "HNC/HTQ". Check the individual course page, or explore courses on the GMIoT website, to see which are approved.
Can I Progress to a Degree After an HTQ?
Yes. HTQ-marked HNCs and HNDs lead on in the same way as standard ones, for example to an HND or a top-up degree. Check entry rules with the university you want to join.
