Overview
Are you ready to take on a key role in shaping the world around us?
This course is designed for people who want to build a career in the civil engineering sector, whether that is in roads and bridges, flood defence, utilities or urban infrastructure. You will pick up the technical knowledge and practical skills needed to work on the front line of construction and infrastructure development.
It is ideal if you want to take your next step after a Level 3 qualification, or if you are already working in the sector and want a recognised qualification to back up your experience.
You will come away with a deep understanding of engineering design, materials science, surveying and structural principles, and of how to apply these to real world civil engineering challenges. If you are analytical, practical and ready to start building a career with purpose, this course is for you.
The North-West Construction & Technology Excellence College (CTEC) at Wigan & Leigh College provides high quality training for careers in construction, and it was created in response to the need for around 40,000 new workers to fill construction jobs across the UK.
Construction is a modern industry with a wide range of opportunities, combining technology, creativity and practical skills, including digital design, 3D modelling and more sustainable methods of building.
CTEC courses are developed with employers, which ensures you gain the skills companies are actively looking for. You will build real experience and develop the knowledge employers value, helping you stand out when you apply for apprenticeships or jobs.
What You’ll Learn
The course is designed to give you a solid foundation in civil engineering, covering everything from environmental context to digital technology and measurement techniques.
You will be involved in a variety of technical and project based modules, which mirror the realities of the workplace and include a group project set by Pearson.
Some modules are core (mandatory), and additional optional modules are also included to make up the total credits required for your qualification. Course leaders choose the optional modules, and they may be subject to change.
You will also build essential skills in analysis, communication, digital literacy and project collaboration, all of which are crucial in modern engineering environments.
Assessment
Your assessment combines written assignments, practical coursework and real world project tasks.
All assessments are designed to reflect industry expectations, and they help you develop the problem solving skills needed for your career.
Progression
This course opens up a range of progression opportunities. One is employment, in roles such as structural technician, engineering surveyor, highways technician or infrastructure assistant.
Another is the HND Civil Engineering, where you study for one additional year to gain your full Level 5 qualification.
A third is a top up degree at university, leading to a BSc (Hons) or similar in Civil Engineering or a related discipline.
A fourth is Higher or Degree Apprenticeships, as this HNC provides a strong foundation for further training within a structured work based route.
The qualification also supports recognition by relevant professional bodies, and it aligns with occupational standards in the sector.
