This course deals with the key practical and technical processes that quantity surveying involves. It gives you a good understanding of the role of the quantity surveying professional and the varied tasks that go with that role, and it also provides a foundation for the professional cost management side of a construction project.
The programme will be delivered either full time or part time, mainly through face to face lectures, with some online delivery where that style suits the module, together with guided tutorials that support learning in both the academic and on site settings.
The CertHE in Quantity Surveying is a standalone course, which means you can gain foundational knowledge of Quantity Surveying within one year, or within two if you choose to study part time.
What You’ll Learn
You will have the chance to learn about and develop areas within the role of Quantity Surveyor, including:
Alongside the fundamentals of cost management, additional digital skills are fully built into the course, using industry standard software, to encourage you to grow your confidence in producing cost estimates and bills of quantities.
You will also develop your problem solving skills, as the course will allow you to build the knowledge needed to give sound and justified cost management advice and guidance in a variety of formats. To help with this, you will be encouraged to develop your technical writing and presentation skills throughout the course.
Assessment
The methods of assessment may differ, but they will generally be a mix of coursework, project based group work, examinations and presentations.
Assessments are based on both live projects and specific built environment scenarios, to make sure you gain the relevant skills to apply and put theory and practice into context in both an academic and industrial setting.
Assessment methods cover written examinations and a range of coursework assessments such as essays, reports, portfolios, performance, presentations and your final year major project. The grades from formal assessments count towards your module mark.

Once you have completed your CertHE qualification, you can, if you wish, progress onto the BSc Quantity Surveying course at Level 5 to complete the full degree qualification.
