Overview
Sheffield Hallam University validates this Level 6 top up course, which offers a natural way to progress from the Higher National Diploma (HND) in Computing (Cyber Security) or a Foundation Degree (FdSc) in this subject area.
The course should appeal to anyone looking to build up their skills further in penetration testing, system hardening and securing enterprise applications.
This course gives you opportunities to gain a deep understanding of practical cyber security, covering key concepts of networks, applications and systems. You will become a cyber security practitioner who understands the core principles of providing cyber defences, and can build on them, to solve real world security problems.
This Higher Technical Qualification is taught as part of the Greater Manchester Institute of Technology (GMIoT), a regional partnership of leading colleges, universities and employers. As a GMIoT student, you will become part of an industry focused learning community and may gain from a range of industry led learning opportunities.
These opportunities can cover access to innovative facilities, industry inspired projects, workplace visits, guest speakers, mentoring, competitions and other activities that help you build the specialist, in demand skills your chosen sector needs.
The additional opportunities the GMIoT offers differ based on employer availability and project activity, but membership ensures that you are part of a network dedicated to preparing the region’s future technical workforce.
What You’ll Learn
Your first module will prepare you to evaluate critically, and apply, suitable security methodologies and principles, with the aim of reducing organisational risk. It will require you to use tools and techniques to test and audit application vulnerabilities and security threats.
In Semester 1 you will also be part of a team that designs, plans and supports the development of IT projects, using the relevant language and tools. This will involve practical exercises built on problems of graded difficulty, which will challenge you to develop your skills and work with others.
In the second semester, you will build the skills to apply and manage on premises and cloud based virtualised computing systems. Working in groups, you will carry out project planning, systems analysis, design, implementation and critical evaluation, which assess your critical understanding of enterprise application management as it is applied to a set problem.
The project module offers consultancy or employer led scholarly research, and it requires you to take on real world enquiry by exploring a specific research or consultancy topic. This gives you the opportunity to apply your knowledge and develop the skills you need to move from undergraduate study into the workplace, or on to further study.
You will gain from a multifaceted learning experience, with the subject taught through lectures, hands on lab sessions, tutorials, practice based applied learning, teamwork and group based learning, along with opportunity for self study and regular feedback.
