Overview
Is stepping into the world of construction as a skilled, confident professional what you want?
The course is designed to help you get work ready, with the technical knowledge, problem solving skills and confidence that employers look for, whether you already work in the sector or are hoping to build your future in it.
A strong foundation in construction design and build management is what you will develop, preparing you to take on real responsibility and lead in a constantly evolving industry. Essential areas such as project planning, technical design and practical construction skills are covered. You will learn how to collaborate effectively with architects, engineers and other construction professionals, so that projects meet design specifications and are completed on time and within budget.
We are aware that life, work and study all compete for your time, which is why the course is delivered flexibly, to fit around your commitments. Day time and evening options are on offer, with September and January start dates. The course also emphasises health and safety, employability skills and competencies for career success, ensuring you are well prepared for the workplace.
At Wigan & Leigh College, the North-West Construction & Technology Excellence College (CTEC) provides high quality training for careers in construction. It was created in response to the need for around 40,000 new workers to fill construction jobs across the UK.
Construction is a modern industry that offers a wide range of opportunities. Technology, creativity and practical skills all come together in it, including digital design, 3D modelling and more sustainable methods of building.
CTEC courses are developed together with employers, so you gain the skills companies are actively looking for. You will build real experience and develop the knowledge employers value, which helps you stand out when you apply for apprenticeships or jobs.
What You’ll Learn
You will look into the core principles of construction management, while also gaining insight into the legal, financial and digital aspects of the sector.
Alongside technical skills, you will build essential workplace strengths such as leadership, communication, planning and decision making.
Assessment
The assessment is practical and focused on work: you will complete written assignments, coursework based on real life scenarios and project work.
Every assessment is set and marked internally, and each reflects tasks and situations you would experience in industry. Helping you build real world skills that employers value is the focus.
Progression
From this course, several exciting next steps become available. Employment is one, since the course is ideal preparation for supervisory or technician roles in construction.
Higher or Degree Apprenticeships are another, with this qualification serving as a stepping stone to further structured training.
The HND is a third, where you study for one more year with us to complete a Higher National Diploma.
A top up degree is a fourth option: after your HND, you can progress to a full honours degree at university.
The course can also be delivered as part of a higher or degree apprenticeship. Mapped to occupational standards, the qualification also supports recognition by professional bodies, helping you move forward with confidence and credibility.
