What Is a DipHE? Diploma of Higher Education | GMIoT

DipHE: Diploma of Higher Education

A two-year, university-awarded qualification at Level 5, equivalent to the second year of a degree. It's the university equivalent of an HND, with a one-year top-up to an honours degree.

What Is a DipHE?

A DipHE (Diploma of Higher Education) is a Level 5 qualification, typically studied full-time over two years. It's equivalent to the first two years of a bachelor's degree and is awarded by a university, as on GMIoT's University of Salford courses.

A DipHE follows the same academic framework as a full degree, just stopping a year short of it. If you want to finish the job later, a one-year top-up at Level 6 gets you to an honours degree.

DipHE vs HND: What's the Difference?

They sit at the same level and run for the same length. Here's how they compare.

Common Questions About DipHEs

Is a DipHE the Same as an HND?
They're the same level and length, but a DipHE is awarded by a university while an HND is awarded by an awarding organisation. Both are equivalent to the second year of a degree.
Can I Top Up a DipHE to a Degree?
Yes. A one-year top-up at Level 6 converts a DipHE into an honours degree. Entry rules vary by university, so check eligibility at the institution you want to join.
What's the Difference Between a DipHE and a Foundation Degree?
Both are Level 5 and take two years. Foundation degrees are usually designed with employers and include more work-related learning, while a DipHE often follows a more academic framework.
How Much Does a DipHE Cost?
Costs vary by course and college, and many students are eligible for student finance. Check the specific course page for current fees and funding options.
