CertHE: Certificate of Higher Education
A one-year, university-awarded qualification at Level 4, equivalent to the first year of a degree. It's the university route onto a DipHE or the later years of a related degree at the Greater Manchester Institute of Technology.
What Is a CertHE?
A CertHE (Certificate of Higher Education) is a Level 4 qualification, typically studied full-time over one academic year. It's equivalent to the first year of a bachelor's degree and is awarded by a university, which is why you'll see it on GMIoT's University of Salford courses.
A CertHE sits on the same step of the ladder as an HNC. The difference is who awards it: a CertHE follows the university's own academic framework, so it slots neatly into that university's DipHE and degree programmes.
CertHE vs HNC: What's the Difference?
They sit on the same level and run for the same length. Here's how they compare.
| CertHE | HNC | |
|---|---|---|
| Level | Level 4 | Level 4 |
| Typical Length | 1 year full-time | 1 year full-time |
| Awarded By | A university | An awarding organisation, delivered by the college |
| What Happens After | Progress to a DipHE or a related degree | Progress to an HND, or into junior roles |
