Irleen is studying an HNC/HND in Controls Engineering at Tameside College, supported by The GMIoT. She chose the course over a full degree because of the real-world experience it offers: rather than just studying engineering, she gets to practise being an engineer throughout her course.

Background
Goal
The course gives students a strong foundation in engineering, with practical skills in electrical installations and making things they would use on the job. There is also plenty of coding with PLCs (programmable logic controllers). Tameside College has a wide range of equipment and resources to support students throughout.
Journey
Irleen values the access she has to her teachers. Classes are small, so students get lots of support and guidance. Half days on Thursdays and Fridays mean she can commit to other things too, and she enjoys the flexibility of college life.
Outcome
Irleen plans to use her skills to help improve automation at Amazon as an RME (reliability and maintenance engineering) engineer. Controls engineering qualifications lead into roles in automation, electrical engineering and manufacturing.
