Background
Goal
The Level 5 HND covers industry-standard skills including digital forensics, penetration testing and crypto programming. Classes are small enough that students can talk to everyone easily and get one-to-one support from teaching staff, and the modules are designed so that students already have the skills employers are looking for.
Over two years, the course starts with computing fundamentals such as programming, networking and website design, then moves on to advanced topics including information security, risk management, applied cryptography in the cloud and a specialist digital forensics unit, finishing with a research project. Assessment combines centre-set and Pearson-set assignments, using reports, presentations, practical workshops and portfolios.
Journey
Beyond the technical skills, Hammad says the course has improved his communication. Speaking to people at open days has helped him build real confidence. He describes the environment as friendly, with staff always happy to help whenever students need support.
Outcome
With the knowledge from his Level 5 qualification, Hammad feels confident he can progress wherever he wants to go next, whether that is cyber security or software, with a long-term future in IT. After the HND, students can complete a one-year BSc (Hons) Computing (Cyber Security) top-up, awarded by Sheffield Hallam University.
