Background
Goal
Harry works four days a week and spends one day at college. As well as practical engineering, the course covers theory such as design and prototyping, rather than focusing purely on manufacturing. Students also study a range of engineering fields, which keeps a number of career pathways open.
As a Higher Technical Qualification, the course was developed with employers and focuses on the working knowledge and skills industry needs, alongside higher-level mechanical science and design. Every lecturer on the course holds a teaching qualification and a Level 6 qualification in mechanical engineering, and the department's lecturers have at least five years of industrial experience.
Journey
Harry says the course has given him a lot of opportunities. Alongside the technical content, he has developed skills in communicating between departments and working effectively in a professional environment. The split between work and study gives him a good balance in life, and by the time he finishes he will have seven years of work experience as well as his qualifications.
Outcome
Once he completes his Level 5 HND, Harry can go on to university-level study or move into the wider world of work with a strong combination of qualifications and experience. With an HND, students can apply for a further year at university to gain a full degree.
